Netflix is rolling out another change that could make account sharing even more difficult for users.

The streaming giant has begun asking users to add a separate email address to each profile on a shared account, marking another step in its ongoing effort to tighten account security and enforce its household-sharing rules.

The new feature began rolling out on June 15, 2026, and is gradually reaching Netflix users worldwide. Instead of relying only on the main account owner’s email, adult profiles can now have their own email address linked directly to them. Once an email is added, the profile owner receives a one-time verification code and can sign in using their own credentials.

According to Netflix, the change is designed to create a more personalized sign-in experience. It also allows individual users to receive verification codes without having to ask the account owner for access. Netflix says this will simplify account recovery and make signing in across different devices more convenient.

However, many subscribers believe the update is about more than convenience. Since Netflix launched its password-sharing crackdown in 2023, the company has continued introducing new measures to ensure accounts are only used within a single household. The latest profile email requirement has led some users to speculate that Netflix is building a stronger system to identify individual users and further discourage account sharing outside the home.

The requirement currently applies to adult profiles and does not affect children’s profiles. Users can still switch between profiles on the same account after signing in, regardless of which email they used. Netflix has also clarified that the update is intended for profiles within the same household rather than people sharing accounts from different locations.

Netflix continues to define a household as a group of devices connected to the internet from the primary viewing location. Standard account holders who want to share their subscription with someone living outside their household must use the company’s Extra Member feature, where it is available.

The rollout is happening gradually, so not every subscriber will see the new sign-in prompt immediately. While Netflix describes the feature as an improvement to account management, the reaction from many users has been mixed, with some expressing concerns that it could pave the way for even stricter account-sharing policies in the future.
