Netflix has quietly taken away the option to cast shows and movies from a phone to most TVs, leaving many users confused about why the feature suddenly stopped working.
The change was spotted on an updated Netflix help page, which now says the company no longer supports casting from mobile devices to most TVs or streaming hardware. Instead, Netflix tells people to open the app directly on their TV and use the remote to browse.
Several users noticed the change in the past few weeks. One user on Reddit said the casting option disappeared on November 10 without any warning. Others found that the cast button still appeared only if they were using an older version of the Netflix app, but once they updated it, the option was gone.
Netflix is still allowing casting on older Chromecast devices and TVs with built-in Google Cast, but this is now limited to customers who pay for the more expensive ad-free plans, which start at $17.99 per month. Anyone using the cheaper ad-supported plan, which costs $7.99 per month, cannot cast from their phone, even if they own older supported devices.
Netflix did not give a reason for removing the feature, and the help page does not explain the change. This is not the first time Netflix has restricted a popular casting option. Back in 2019, the company removed AirPlay support, saying it wanted to maintain its viewing quality standards. Netflix has been contacted for comment, but so far, there has been no response.
