Netflix is sharpening its focus on family-friendly gaming with the launch of a new app designed specifically for younger audiences.
Called Netflix Playground, the app centers on games for children aged eight and under. Like the rest of Netflix’s gaming offerings, everything in Playground is included within a standard subscription, meaning there are no ads or in-app purchases to worry about.
The app has already launched in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, with a global rollout planned for April 28. At launch, most of the games are based on well-known kids’ shows such as Peppa Pig and Sesame Street, which is now also part of Netflix’s streaming catalog. According to John Derderian, Netflix’s VP of Animation Series and Kids & Family TV, the goal is to create a seamless space where kids can explore, learn, and play all in one place.
This move is part of a broader shift in Netflix’s gaming strategy. The company appears to be stepping back from indie titles and large-scale experimental projects like Spry Fox’s MMO Spirit Crossing, instead focusing on more accessible and mainstream experiences. Alongside kids’ games, Netflix is also exploring cloud-based gaming for TVs, including a FIFA title expected to launch around the time of the World Cup.
Although Netflix entered the gaming space in 2021, it has struggled to build strong momentum despite high-profile releases such as Grand Theft Auto. The journey has included setbacks, including the closure of multiple studios like Boss Fight, known for Squid Game: Unleashed, and even a high-budget AAA studio that shut down before releasing a single game. In 2025, Netflix’s president of games, Alain Tascan, acknowledged the need for a clearer direction, emphasizing a renewed focus on areas like TV-connected games and family-friendly content as the company works to define its identity in the gaming world.
