Mozilla has announced a major privacy upgrade in Firefox 145 that makes it even harder for websites to track users through digital fingerprinting.

The new protections will first be available in Private Browsing Mode and Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict mode before being rolled out to all users by default.

Digital fingerprinting is a tracking method that collects small details about your device—such as your time zone, screen resolution, operating system, and fonts—to create a unique digital profile. This allows advertisers and trackers to follow users across websites, even when cookies are blocked or private browsing is enabled.

Firefox already includes anti-fingerprinting technology as part of its Enhanced Tracking Protection system. Since 2021, Mozilla has been improving these defenses step by step, targeting the most common tracking techniques. The company said its first phase of protection reduced trackability to around 35 percent, down from 65 percent without any protection.

With Firefox 145, Mozilla is launching “Phase 2” protections, which introduce several new measures to make tracking even harder. These include blocking access to local fonts, limiting information about hardware details and processor cores, and standardizing touch support and screen resolution. For example, websites will now only see standard system fonts, processor cores will always appear as two, and touch capability will report limited values.

Mozilla says these new measures reduce the percentage of users who can be uniquely identified to just 20 percent. However, the company also explained that blocking everything would break some websites, so a balance between privacy and usability is necessary. Users who face issues can disable the new protections for specific websites if needed.

Firefox 145 will officially launch tomorrow, and users can already download it from Mozilla’s FTP server. This release also marks the end of support for the 32-bit Linux version, which has been discontinued due to low demand.
