Microsoft has started testing a new AI-powered Auto-Categorization feature in the Photos app on Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs.

The tool is designed to automatically sort images into categories like screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes, making it easier for users to manage and find their photos.

The feature is rolling out with Microsoft Photos version 2025.11090.25001.0 or higher across all Windows Insider channels. According to Microsoft, Auto-Categorization uses a language-agnostic AI model capable of identifying document types regardless of the language in the image.

Users will be able to view organized categories directly in the Photos app sidebar or use the Search bar to locate images instantly. Categories can also be adjusted manually, and Microsoft is encouraging feedback to improve accuracy.

“Auto-Categorization automatically detects and organizes your photo collection into meaningful categories like screenshots, receipts, identity documents, and notes using AI. It’s designed to save time, reduce clutter, and make your photo library easier to navigate,”
said Ronnie Myers, Microsoft senior product manager, in a blog post.

Alongside Auto-Categorization, Microsoft is also expanding other AI-powered features in Photos:
