Microsoft is expanding the capabilities of Windows Update, enabling it to support updates for third-party apps and drivers.
As part of a new private preview, developers can now join the Windows Update orchestration platform, a system designed to unify and intelligently manage all types of updates, including business applications and device drivers, alongside traditional Windows updates.
The new platform aims to offer seamless integration by allowing apps to schedule updates based on factors such as user activity, battery status, and even eco-friendly energy timing. It also enables third-party apps to tap into native Windows Update notifications and be included in the update history, increasing visibility and system-level integration.
Microsoft will support updates for MSIX / APPX packaged apps and select custom Win32 applications. Developers who opt into the orchestration platform will benefit from future enhancements to Windows Update automatically.
