Microsoft is taking a major leap toward a password-free future.
Starting now, new Microsoft accounts will be “passwordless by default,” meaning users will sign in using more secure methods like passkeys, push notifications, or security keys, rather than creating a traditional password.
This move builds on Microsoft’s long-standing support for passwordless logins and comes alongside a redesigned sign-in experience optimized for passkey-first authentication. While existing accounts can still use passwords, users are encouraged to remove them via account settings.
To reflect this shift, Microsoft renames “World Password Day” to “World Passkey Day.” The company reports that nearly 1 million passkeys are registered daily, and passkey users enjoy a 98% success rate when signing in—compared to just 32% for password-based logins.
