Microsoft has fixed a known issue that prevented the built-in File History backup feature from working properly on some Windows systems after installing the September 2026 security updates.
File History, introduced with Windows 8, automatically backs up files from a user’s profile, including Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop, to an external drive such as a USB device or to a network storage location. It also allows users to restore older versions of files that were accidentally deleted or damaged.
Microsoft previously warned that the September security updates could cause File History backups to stop working. On affected systems, FileHistory.exe and KERNELBASE.dll crashes could also appear in Event Viewer.
Users experiencing the problem could see “Reconnect your drive” notifications even when a compatible backup drive was connected and functioning correctly. Previously backed-up files could also display “No previous version available,” while the Last Backup timestamp would stop updating.
Microsoft has now released a fix for Windows 11 through the September 2026 preview updates. The fix is included in optional cumulative update KB5124006 for Windows 11 26H1 and KB5124010 for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft says the updates address an issue that could prevent File History from backing up or restoring files to external drives or network locations.
Users who choose not to install the optional preview updates will receive the File History fix through the next Patch Tuesday updates, scheduled for October 13.
