Microsoft is adding free AI-powered text writing features to Notepad for Windows 11 users with Copilot+ PCs.

The update, now rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels with Notepad version 11.2508.28.0, introduces tools for text summarization, rewriting, and generation.

These capabilities, previously tied to Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Copilot Pro subscriptions, will now be available without extra cost. Users can choose between local and cloud AI models if they have a Microsoft 365 account, but even without a subscription, the local model will still provide AI writing support. For now, the new tools only work with English content.

Microsoft says the features can be disabled from settings if users prefer the classic experience, or by uninstalling the Notepad app to revert to the traditional notepad.exe. Since its redesign in 2021, Notepad has steadily gained upgrades, including tabs, spell-check, autocorrect, and text formatting.

Alongside this update, Microsoft also announced new improvements for other apps. Paint is gaining Photoshop-like project file support and an opacity slider for brushes, while Snipping Tool now includes a “Quick markup” option for faster screenshot annotations.
