Will Cathcart is stepping down as the head of WhatsApp after leading the messaging platform for seven years.

The announcement was made by Mark Zuckerberg, who praised Cathcart for helping grow WhatsApp to more than three billion users worldwide while championing privacy across the platform.

Cathcart will remain at Meta in a new role focused on building products from the ground up. Zuckerberg said he looks forward to continuing to work closely with him as he takes on new initiatives within the company.

Kunal Shah will succeed Cathcart as WhatsApp’s next leader. Shah founded CRED, one of India’s leading technology companies, and brings experience in building consumer-focused digital products at scale.

Zuckerberg said Shah’s builder mindset and global perspective make him well suited to lead the world’s largest messaging app as WhatsApp continues to expand its services for billions of users and millions of businesses worldwide.
