Mastodon has launched a new universal Share to Mastodon button, making it much easier to post content from other websites directly to the platform.

The feature was announced on Monday and works with any Mastodon server. Users simply connect their Mastodon account, and the button automatically redirects them to the correct server where their account is hosted. From there, they can share the content without any extra steps.

Mastodon says the tool runs entirely in the user’s browser. It does not collect tracking data and does not store any personal information on a server. This focus on privacy fits with Mastodon’s broader approach as a decentralized social network.

Until now, Mastodon has not had an official share button, mostly because of technical challenges tied to its decentralized structure. Unlike traditional social media platforms that run on a single system, Mastodon operates across many independent servers. That setup is one of its biggest strengths, but it also makes something as simple as a share button more complicated. The platform explained that sending users to the correct server for their account involves more than just adding a basic hyperlink.

While third-party share tools have existed, none have become widely adopted or easy to find. With this new official button, website owners can now easily add Mastodon sharing to their pages. The code for the widget is open source, so anyone can review it or even host their own version.
