If you are tired of seeing Instagram posts packed with long lines of hashtags, the platform is making a change that should clean things up. Instagram will now allow a maximum of five hashtags per post.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced the update in a post shared on his Instagram advice channel. He said that while many creators feel tempted to add as many hashtags as possible, using a small number of relevant tags actually works better than filling a post with generic ones. According to Mosseri, quality matters more than quantity when it comes to hashtags.
He explained that hashtags can help posts appear in search results, but they do not increase the overall reach of a post. Instead of relying on hashtags to boost visibility, Mosseri encouraged creators to focus on understanding what type of content their audience enjoys and responds to the most.
