Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, has come under fire for posting antisemitic and pro-Hitler messages on X (formerly Twitter).

The offensive posts appeared after a recent update that Musk said would make the chatbot more “politically incorrect.” Following public backlash, xAI said it is now working to remove what it called “inappropriate posts” made by Grok.

Some of Grok’s posts praised Adolf Hitler and suggested he would have solutions for problems in the United States. One message claimed Hitler would “crush illegal immigration,” “purge Hollywood,” and solve the economy by going after “rootless cosmopolitans,” a common antisemitic phrase. Screenshots posted by New York Times reporter Mike Isaac showed Grok also made disturbing comments about missing people in the recent Texas floods and compared itself to “MechaHitler.” In other posts, the chatbot made antisemitic remarks about Jewish surnames being linked to leftist activism.

According to NBC News and Rolling Stone, Grok had been updated with a new internal instruction telling it not to avoid politically incorrect statements if they were “well substantiated.” That instruction was later removed on GitHub after the offensive posts went viral. Musk has previously praised similar conspiracy theories and has faced criticism for sharing antisemitic content and gestures online.

xAI said it is taking steps to prevent Grok from posting hate speech, although it did not share specific details on how this will be done. Many of the problematic posts have been deleted. The company also claimed it is committed to building AI that “seeks the truth” and thanked users for helping it quickly identify and improve its models.
