Google is improving its Veo 3.1 AI video model to give users more control and better results when creating videos.
The latest update focuses on making the model pay closer attention to reference images, adding native vertical video support, and allowing videos to be upscaled to a much higher resolution.
One of the main improvements comes to the Ingredients to Video tool, which Google first introduced last year. This tool lets users generate videos using up to three reference images. These images can include characters, backgrounds, objects, or textures, helping users guide how the final video should look. With the new update, Veo follows these reference images more carefully, resulting in videos that feel more expressive and visually consistent. Google says this also improves storytelling and dialogue within generated clips.
Another key change is better consistency across scenes. Characters now look the same even when they appear in different environments or clips. Users can also reuse objects, backgrounds, and textures across multiple scenes, which makes it easier to create videos that feel connected and professional instead of random or disconnected.
Veo 3.1 also now supports vertical video output when using the Ingredients to Video tool. Users can generate videos in a native 9:16 aspect ratio, which is ideal for platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. This means creators no longer need to crop horizontal videos manually in editing software. Google had already allowed vertical video generation for text-only prompts last year, but this update brings the same support to image-based video creation as well.
These new features are starting to roll out in the Gemini app and are also being integrated into YouTube Shorts and the YouTube Create app for the first time. This move shows Google’s goal of making AI video tools more accessible to everyday creators.
In terms of video quality, Veo 3.1 still generates videos at 720p by default. However, users can now upscale their videos to higher resolutions. Google says 1080p output has been improved to look sharper and cleaner, and videos can now be upscaled all the way to 4K. While this is not true native 4K generation, which Google mentioned back in 2024, the ability to upscale videos directly within the platform is still a useful upgrade.

Overall, the Veo 3.1 update makes AI video creation more practical and creator-friendly. With better image control, native vertical video support, and higher resolution upscaling, Veo is becoming a stronger option for people who want to create short-form and story-driven video content using AI.
