Google is rolling out a major security upgrade for Android users. Starting in 2026, all apps installed on certified Android devices will need to come from verified developers.
This move aims to reduce malware, especially from sideloaded apps, which are over 50 times more likely to contain malicious software than apps from Google Play.
Mandatory Verification and Timeline
- October 2025: Early access for developers
- March 2026: Open verification for all developers
- September 2026: Mandatory in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand
- 2027: Global rollout
Developer Requirements
- Personal Accounts: Legal name, address, and government-issued ID
- Organization Accounts: D-U-N-S number, official documents, and contact information
Impact on Users
Devices will block unverified apps and display a security warning if a user tries to install them. This is part of Google’s effort to improve user trust and reduce malware from unverified sources.
