Google has announced plans to appeal a recent antitrust ruling that could impact how it operates in the online search market.

The company stated on X that it still believes the court’s original decision was incorrect and looks forward to appealing the case.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta recently heard final arguments on what steps Google should take after being found guilty of maintaining an illegal monopoly in online search and advertising. Back in April, the judge also ruled that Google unfairly dominated parts of the online advertising market.

The U.S. Department of Justice has recommended that Google sell off parts of its ad business and stop paying companies like Apple to be the default search engine on devices.

Regulators are also concerned that Google’s strong position in search gives it an unfair advantage in developing and promoting artificial intelligence tools, such as its Gemini AI.

In response, Google’s attorney said the company is already taking steps to promote fair competition. For example, it has ended exclusive deals with smartphone makers like Samsung, allowing them to pre-install other search engines and AI apps.
