Google is rolling out a mandatory Android 16 update to Pixel 6A devices starting July 8 to address overheating issues that have led to at least two reports of the phones catching fire.

The update is designed to manage battery health on certain impacted devices by reducing battery capacity after 400 charging cycles.

According to a support page and statements from Google spokesperson Alex Moriconi, users with affected devices will receive a warning after 375 charging cycles, alerting them that new battery management features will soon be enabled. Once activated, users may experience shorter battery life between charges, reduced charging speeds, and temporary changes to how the phone displays battery capacity.

The issue appears to affect only a subset of Pixel 6A units, though Google hasn’t clarified what distinguishes these devices. Affected users are eligible for a free battery replacement, and Google has provided a tool to check device eligibility.

This isn’t the first time Google has faced battery-related troubles. The company previously offered a free battery replacement or a $100 credit to Pixel 4A users facing similar issues and currently maintains an extended repair program for battery swelling problems on the Pixel 7A.
