The US Department of Defense has introduced a new artificial intelligence platform called GenAI.mil, and Google Cloud’s Gemini will be the first AI system available on it.
The announcement came with big promises from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who referred to himself as the “Secretary of War.” He said the platform will give American military personnel direct access to powerful frontier AI models and claimed it will help make the country’s defense forces more effective. In a video message, he said that the future of warfare will be driven by AI.
Google offered a more practical explanation of how the technology will be used. According to the company, Gemini can help with tasks such as summarizing long policy documents, generating compliance checklists, pulling key details from project statements, and creating detailed risk assessments. Google also said that the system is limited to unclassified work and that none of the data handled on the platform will be used to train its public AI models.
The company already has a history of working with the Pentagon on AI projects, including the widely criticized Project Maven drone initiative. Earlier this year, Google dropped its previous commitment to avoid using AI for weapons or surveillance systems.
The launch of GenAI.mil even came as a surprise to some government workers, hinting that the announcement may have been rolled out more quickly than expected.
