At Google I/O 2025, Google announced a powerful new feature for Chrome’s built-in password manager—automatic password changing for weak or compromised credentials.
This feature aims to improve both security and user convenience, letting Chrome update your passwords on supported websites with minimal user effort.
When Chrome detects a compromised password during sign-in, Google Password Manager will now prompt users with an option to “fix it automatically.” On compatible sites, Chrome can generate a strong new password and automatically update it for the user, eliminating the hassle of manual changes.
“We know that if something is annoying, people are not going to do it,” said Parisa Tabriz, VP and GM of Chrome. “Automatic password change is a win for safety and usability.”
The feature is set to launch later this year, and Google is encouraging developers to start preparing their websites and apps for compatibility. Notably, the auto-change feature will require user consent before taking any action, ensuring users stay in control of their credentials.
