GitHub, owned by Microsoft, has started rolling out new AI coding agents from Anthropic and OpenAI directly inside its platform.
The update brings Claude and Codex AI agents to GitHub, GitHub Mobile, and Visual Studio Code through a public preview.
The new feature is part of GitHub’s Agent HQ initiative, which aims to make AI assistants a natural part of daily development work. Developers with Copilot Pro Plus or Copilot Enterprise subscriptions can now choose between GitHub Copilot, Claude, Codex, or custom agents when working on tasks, issues, or pull requests. Each agent uses a premium request, allowing developers to compare results and decide which AI works best for a specific job.
GitHub says this approach reduces tool switching and keeps developers focused within one workflow. The company also plans to expand access to more Copilot plans and add additional AI agents in the future, showing its growing openness to using multiple AI models side by side rather than relying on just one.
