At least 17 people have died and more than 200 others were injured after police opened fire on Gen Z protesters in Baneshwor, Kathmandu, on Monday.
The protest was against the government’s recent ban on major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (Twitter).
According to hospital reports, six people died at the Trauma Centre, five at Everest Hospital, three at Civil Hospital, two at Kathmandu Medical College, and one at Teaching Hospital. Doctors said the number could rise as many injured are in critical condition. Some of the victims were school children, but their identities have not yet been confirmed.
The protest started peacefully but turned violent when demonstrators tried to march towards the Federal Parliament. Police used tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and live ammunition to control the crowd.
The movement began after the government enforced a ban on unregistered social media platforms on September 4. Young protesters say the decision violates freedom of speech and digital rights. The campaign is mostly organized through TikTok and has quickly gained nationwide support.
In response, the Kathmandu District Administration Office has announced a curfew from 12:30 PM to 10 PM in Baneshwor, Tinkune, Singhadurbar, and near the President’s Office to prevent further violence.

The protest isn’t just about a social media ban. Nepal’s Gen-Z youth are standing against corruption, misgovernance.
