Firefox is rolling out a new update that gives users more control over artificial intelligence features in the browser.

With the release of Firefox 148 on February 24, desktop users will see a new AI controls section in the settings.

The idea is simple. Some people want AI tools in their browser. Others do not. Mozilla says it listened to user feedback and built a system that allows everyone to choose what works best for them.

In the new AI controls section, users can manage all AI features in one place. There is also a “Block AI enhancements” toggle. When turned on, it disables current and future generative AI features in Firefox. Users will not see pop-ups or suggestions related to AI once this option is enabled.

For those who want to use AI features, Firefox allows individual control. At launch, users can manage tools such as webpage translations, automatic alt text for images in PDFs, AI-powered tab grouping, link previews that show key points before opening a page, and an AI chatbot in the sidebar.

The sidebar chatbot supports multiple services, including ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral. Users can choose which chatbot they prefer while browsing.

Mozilla says user preferences will remain saved even after future browser updates. Settings can also be changed at any time.

The feature will first be available in Firefox Nightly for early testers. A wider rollout begins with Firefox 148 later this month.
