The FBI is reportedly investigating a cybersecurity breach that affected one of its internal systems used to manage wiretaps and foreign intelligence surveillance warrants.
The incident was first reported by CNN on Thursday, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter.
According to the report, hackers gained access to a network that supports the administration of surveillance operations. These systems are typically used to handle court-authorized wiretaps and requests under foreign intelligence surveillance laws, making them critical tools for national security investigations.
In a brief statement, an FBI spokesperson confirmed that the agency detected unusual activity on its networks. The bureau said it moved quickly to respond after identifying the suspicious behavior. Officials did not provide details about how the breach happened, how long the attackers had access, or whether any sensitive data was compromised.
The spokesperson said the agency has used all available technical capabilities to contain the issue and continue investigating the incident.
The breach adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting U.S. government systems and major American companies. In 2025, Chinese hackers reportedly infiltrated the U.S. Treasury and the National Nuclear Security Administration, which is responsible for safeguarding the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
Around the same time, Russian hackers gained access to sealed records stored in the U.S. federal courts’ filing system. These incidents raised concerns about the security of critical government infrastructure and sensitive legal data.
The FBI has also warned about ongoing cyber campaigns from foreign groups. One example is the Chinese-linked hacking group known as Salt Typhoon, which the bureau says has compromised at least 200 U.S. companies. Among the confirmed victims are major telecommunications providers such as AT&T and Verizon, along with companies including Lumen, Charter Communications, and Windstream.
