Facebook has started rolling out new AI-powered features that let users animate their profile pictures and add more creative effects to Stories, Memories, and text posts.
The update is designed to make profiles and posts feel more expressive and visually engaging without requiring any editing skills.
With the new animated profile picture option, users can turn a still photo into a short animation using preset effects like waving, wearing a party hat, falling confetti, hearts, or a more natural motion. According to Meta, the feature works best with a photo that shows a single person facing the camera with a clearly visible face. More animation styles are expected to be added over time, especially for seasonal moments and special events.

Facebook is also expanding its AI tools for Stories and Memories through a feature called Restyle. This allows users to change the look and feel of a photo by either typing a custom prompt or choosing from preset styles such as anime, illustrated, or low-poly. Users can also adjust the mood, lighting, colors, or background of an image, giving older photos a fresh look before sharing them again.
Another new addition lets people enhance text-only posts with animated or still backgrounds. While writing a post, users can tap a colorful A icon to choose effects like moving waves, falling leaves, or other visual styles that help posts stand out in the feed. Meta says more backgrounds, including seasonal designs, will arrive in the future.
