Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has raised 20 billion dollars in a Series E funding round, marking one of the largest investments in the artificial intelligence sector.

The company, which develops the Grok chatbot and owns X, said the funding will support expansion of its data centers and AI models.

Investors in the round include Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, and the Qatar Investment Authority, along with strategic backers Nvidia and Cisco. xAI did not disclose whether the investments were made through equity or debt.

xAI claims it now reaches around 600 million monthly active users across X and Grok. However, the funding announcement comes as the company faces serious scrutiny after Grok reportedly generated sexualized deepfakes of real people, including children.

Authorities in the European Union, the United Kingdom, India, Malaysia, and France have launched investigations into xAI over potential safety and content moderation failures.
