Elon Musk’s social media platform X is under fire after nine civil society organisations filed complaints with the European Commission and France’s media regulator, Arcom.
The groups allege that X is using sensitive personal data for targeted advertising, possibly violating the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The organisations, including AI Forensics, European Digital Rights, and Global Witness, say they reviewed X’s Ad Repository and found examples of ads that appeared to be based on users’ political views, sexual orientation, religion, and health status. These data categories are protected under Article 9 of the GDPR and are not allowed for use in ad targeting under the DSA.
“We express our deep concern regarding the use by X of users’ sensitive personal data for targeted advertisements,” the group said in a joint statement.
Neither X, the European Commission, nor Arcom has responded publicly to the complaints. The civil rights groups are urging regulators to investigate the platform and take action under EU tech rules.
