The Coca-Cola Company has confirmed that hackers stole data from its dairy subsidiary, Fairlife, during a ransomware attack that disrupted production earlier this month.a
The company said it is still restoring some affected systems, but most production operations across the United States have resumed.
Coca-Cola first disclosed the cyberattack in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on July 16, revealing that a ransomware incident had temporarily interrupted Fairlife’s production. Fairlife is well known for producing ultra-filtered milk, protein shakes, and nutritional beverages, operating four manufacturing facilities across the U.S. and generating more than $1 billion in annual retail sales.
A few days after the incident became public, the Anubis ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack and listed Fairlife on its data leak site. The group alleged it had stolen one terabyte of company data and threatened to publish the files unless a ransom was paid.
The attackers also claimed they had encrypted Fairlife’s Nutanix systems, leaving the company with no way to recover the affected infrastructure. However, Coca-Cola has not confirmed those claims.
According to Coca-Cola, the cyberattack involved unauthorized access to part of Fairlife’s systems, allowing the attackers to steal certain data while also forcing a temporary suspension of production operations. The company said it immediately notified law enforcement after discovering the breach and did not comply with the attackers’ demands to negotiate.
Coca-Cola also stated that existing product inventory helped prevent major shortages while production was temporarily disrupted. The company emphasized that the incident did not affect the quality or safety of Fairlife products.
The deadline previously set by the Anubis ransomware gang for publishing the stolen information has now expired, and the allegedly stolen data has reportedly been released online for download.
