A Senate staffer has alleged that Chinese hackers stole emails from the US State Department in a breach of Microsoft’s Exchange email server software.

The staffer, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the hackers were able to access the emails of at least 60,000 State Department employees, Reuters reports.

Microsoft has confirmed the breach and said that it has been working with the US government to investigate the incident. The company also said that it has released a security patch for the Exchange software vulnerability that was exploited by the hackers.

The Chinese government has denied any involvement in the breach.
