OpenAI is making ChatGPT Voice more useful on mobile by allowing users to use voice commands to get work done through connected apps.
The update brings some of the agent-style capabilities previously available on desktop to the ChatGPT mobile app.
With the new features, users can speak to ChatGPT and ask it to perform tasks instead of simply answering questions. Depending on the apps and services connected to an account, this can include creating a document, drafting an email, summarizing messages or working with files.
The update builds on OpenAI’s recent improvements to ChatGPT Voice. The company previously expanded Voice on desktop, allowing users to use spoken instructions for tasks in Work and other parts of ChatGPT. The same general workflow is now making its way to mobile devices.
ChatGPT Voice Gets More Useful on Mobile
The biggest change is that Voice can now work with connected apps and plugins during a conversation. OpenAI says Live supports plugins on the web, iOS and Android, allowing users to use connected services while speaking with ChatGPT. Existing app permissions and usage limits still apply.
For example, a user could ask ChatGPT to work with connected information rather than manually opening several apps and copying information between them. On supported plans, Voice in Work can also be used to create documents, presentations and spreadsheets or work in a browser.
ChatGPT Voice Also Works With CarPlay
ChatGPT is already available through Apple CarPlay on supported iPhones running iOS 26.4 or later. Users can start a new voice conversation or continue a recent chat directly from the CarPlay interface.
The CarPlay experience is designed to be voice-first, allowing drivers to interact with ChatGPT without needing to use the phone while driving. OpenAI notes that CarPlay has limitations and cannot access maps, vehicle information or control other apps.
The mobile Voice update makes ChatGPT more useful for people who want to start a task while away from their computer and continue working across devices later. OpenAI’s latest updates also allow unfinished Work tasks to continue in text after a Voice conversation ends.
