OpenAI has begun quietly testing ads within ChatGPT, marking a significant shift in how the platform may operate in the future.
Until now, ChatGPT has offered a clean experience without ads, even though premium plans and advanced models are available. Unlike Google Search, which shows ads that often shape people’s buying choices, ChatGPT has never tried to sell products directly to its users.
This may soon change. A user on X named Tibor spotted that the latest beta version of the ChatGPT Android app includes new internal references to ad features. These include terms like “bazaar content,” “search ad,” and “search ads carousel,” suggesting that OpenAI is preparing to introduce advertising, starting with the search experience inside ChatGPT.

The idea could have huge implications for the online economy. Many people do not realize that ChatGPT may understand user preferences more deeply than traditional search engines. With that level of insight, OpenAI could eventually create highly personalized ads that match what people actually want to buy. It could also place ads inside the search results, similar to how Google promotes sponsored links.
So far, the leaked details indicate that ads will be limited to search results, at least in the beginning. But the approach could easily expand across the broader ChatGPT interface over time.
