OpenAI has introduced a new Health experience in ChatGPT that lets users securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records, making it easier to understand personal health information in one place.
The feature is rolling out today to logged-in users aged 18 and older in the United States across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS. It is not currently available in Codex.
According to OpenAI, millions of people already use ChatGPT for health-related questions, such as understanding lab results, preparing for doctor appointments, or making sense of medical terms. Until now, users often had to manually upload reports or explain their medical history during each conversation. The new Health experience is designed to reduce that effort by securely connecting relevant health information with the user’s permission.
Once connected, ChatGPT can compare new lab results with previous tests, summarize changes since recent appointments, explain medical records in plain English, and identify trends across sleep, activity, workouts, medications, and other health data. The AI can also use this information during everyday conversations when appropriate. For example, it can recommend meals based on dietary restrictions or suggest lower-impact activities after a recent injury, provided the user allows access to their health information.
OpenAI also highlighted improvements to its AI models for medical conversations. The company said GPT-5.5 Instant, which is available to free users, performs better at recognizing situations that may require urgent medical care, asking follow-up questions, and explaining complex health information more clearly. Meanwhile, GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid subscribers, is designed to handle more advanced health discussions, including interpreting medical notes, comparing changes in lab results over time, and helping users prepare informed questions for healthcare providers.
The company emphasized that ChatGPT is meant to support, not replace, professional medical advice. OpenAI said it worked with hundreds of physicians to evaluate and improve the system using realistic healthcare scenarios before the public release. While the models have shown significant improvements, the company cautioned that ChatGPT can still make mistakes and users should always verify important medical information with qualified healthcare professionals.
Privacy is a major focus of the new feature. OpenAI said all connected health information receives additional encryption protection, and medical records, Apple Health data, and conversations that use them are never used to train its foundation AI models or for advertising purposes. Users remain in full control of what information ChatGPT can access, can disconnect their health accounts at any time, and can choose whether health information should be used in individual conversations or automatically when relevant.
Health supports Apple Health, selected medical records from participating U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, and Function Health. Users who already sync wearable devices, fitness trackers, or nutrition apps with Apple Health can also make that information available to ChatGPT if they choose. OpenAI noted that some third-party health metrics may not be transferred depending on the app and available data.

To start using the feature, eligible users can open the new Health section from the ChatGPT sidebar or More menu, connect their supported health accounts, review synced conditions and medications, and begin asking health-related questions using their own medical information as context. The rollout begins today for U.S. users on the web and iOS, with additional availability expected in the future.
