ChatGPT is getting closer to the 1 billion user milestone. OpenAI announced on Friday that its AI chatbot now has 900 million weekly active users worldwide.
The company also revealed that it has reached 50 million paying subscribers. According to OpenAI, growth has picked up strongly at the start of the year. January and February are on track to become the biggest months ever for new subscriber additions.
OpenAI said people use ChatGPT for learning, writing, planning and building projects. As more users join, the company claims the product continues to improve with faster responses, better reliability, stronger safety systems and more consistent performance.
The latest figure represents a jump of 100 million weekly users compared to October 2025, when OpenAI reported 800 million active users.
The user milestone comes alongside another major announcement. OpenAI has raised $110 billion in private funding, making it one of the largest private funding rounds in history. The round includes a $50 billion investment from Amazon, along with $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. The funding values the company at a $730 billion pre-money valuation.
The investment round is still open, and OpenAI expects additional investors to participate.
