OpenAI is getting ready to introduce a new “adult mode” in ChatGPT, and the company now has a clearer timeline for the launch.
According to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, the feature is expected to roll out in the first quarter of 2026. She shared the update during a media briefing about the upcoming GPT-5.2 model. Simo explained that the company wants to ensure its age prediction technology is accurate before allowing adult content inside ChatGPT, especially since the feature will only be available to verified adults.
OpenAI has been working on an age prediction system that can automatically identify when a user is under 18 and apply stricter safety rules. The company is already testing this system in selected countries to measure how well it can recognize teenagers without mistakenly flagging adults. Simo said OpenAI wants to make sure the model is reliable before enabling any new adult-focused features.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has previously hinted that ChatGPT could include adult interactions in the future, especially for verified users who request it. Several other AI platforms, including Grok, have already experimented with more relaxed content rules, which has increased pressure on OpenAI to introduce similar options. The company, however, wants to roll out the feature carefully and responsibly, especially as more countries introduce strict age verification laws.
Many online platforms have recently added stronger age checks to follow new regulations, and OpenAI is taking a similar path before opening access to adult content. If testing continues smoothly, ChatGPT’s adult mode will become available within the first few months of 2026, offering more personalized and mature experiences while keeping safety controls in place for younger users.
