OpenAI has clarified that ChatGPT ads are not expanding outside the United States right now, even though some users became concerned after seeing mentions of ads in the company’s updated privacy policy.
The confusion started when Reddit users noticed that the new privacy policy included references to advertising. That led many people to believe OpenAI was preparing to bring ads to more countries. But according to OpenAI, that is not happening at this time.
The company told BleepingComputer that ChatGPT ads are still only being rolled out in the US. OpenAI also said it has nothing new to announce about a global launch.
ChatGPT ads first started appearing in the US on February 9, 2026. Since then, OpenAI has been slowly expanding access within the country. Right now, these ads are shown only to logged-in users on the Free and Go plans in the US.
OpenAI says the ads appear below answers and are clearly marked, so users can tell they are sponsored content. The company also says these ads are handled by systems that are separate from the chat model itself. In other words, advertisers cannot change, rank, or shape ChatGPT’s actual responses.

Even so, some people are still worried because the ads are personalized. That means they may be more closely connected to what users are asking about, which could make them more influential when people are making buying decisions.
OpenAI says it does not share users’ conversations, chat history, memories, or personal information with advertisers. The company also says ads are not shown to people under 18 based on behavior signals. At the same time, users cannot force ChatGPT to show ads just by asking for them.

For now, OpenAI says it is moving carefully and learning from real-world use before making any bigger decisions. When asked about a wider rollout, the company did not provide any timeline or further details.
