Bluesky says its latest major outage was caused by another distributed denial-of-service attack that overwhelmed the social network with large amounts of unwanted traffic.

The company confirmed the incident after users experienced disruptions lasting roughly a day.

“We have upgraded our defenses in response, and we continue to monitor the situation,” Bluesky said in a post confirming the attack. The company did not provide additional details about the size of the attack or who was behind it.

A Bluesky spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about the incident.

DDoS attacks work by sending huge amounts of unwanted traffic toward websites or online services in an attempt to consume their available resources and make them difficult or impossible for legitimate users to access. Attackers can rely on large botnets or residential proxy networks made up of compromised or voluntarily shared internet-connected devices to generate the traffic.

Security researchers discussing the incident in the IFIN public forum said an Iran-backed group had claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Bluesky has not publicly attributed the incident to any particular group.

The reported attack comes as Iranian-linked cyber groups have increasingly targeted US businesses and critical infrastructure amid heightened tensions following the US and Israel-led war earlier this year.

This is also not the first major DDoS-related disruption Bluesky has experienced recently. The social network suffered a prolonged series of outages in April after being hit by another large flood of web traffic.

It remains unclear whether the latest attack and the earlier incidents were carried out by the same attackers or are otherwise connected.
