Apple will soon allow developers to partner with each other to offer subscription bundles through the App Store, giving users access to multiple apps at a lower price than subscribing to each one separately.
The change was announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Until now, Apple’s App Bundles feature mainly allowed a single developer to sell several of their own apps together as one package. With the new update, developers will be able to team up with other app makers and create bundles across different companies.
Apple says the move will let developers offer users “more for less.” Instead of being limited to their own apps, developers can now create subscription packages with other apps that serve a similar audience or work well together.
The idea is similar to subscription bundles already used in streaming and media, where companies combine services to make the overall package feel more valuable and encourage users to keep paying.
For app developers, this could work well when their products appeal to the same type of users but do not directly compete with each other. A creative bundle, for example, could include a camera app, photo and video editing tools, and an app for publishing content on social media.
Productivity apps could also benefit from the change. One developer could offer a to-do list app while another includes a calendar or notes app, giving users a more complete set of tools under one subscription bundle.
Apple also said developers will be able to create “Suites,” which are subscription packages that are not available as standalone purchases.
