Apple has confirmed it removed several AI-powered “nudify” apps from the App Store after San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu accused both Apple and Google of allowing apps that generate non-consensual nude deepfakes.
The city sent cease-and-desist letters demanding the companies remove 13 apps and stop profiting from software that can digitally “undress” people without their consent.
According to reports, Apple told The Verge that it had already removed the apps identified in the complaint for violating its App Store policies. Google has also removed a number of similar apps but faces ongoing pressure to improve enforcement.
The controversy follows investigations showing that AI nudify apps have been downloaded hundreds of millions of times and are frequently used to create abusive deepfake images targeting women and girls. San Francisco officials argue that app store operators should take stronger action to prevent such apps from being distributed.
This case highlights increasing regulatory scrutiny of AI-generated explicit content and could lead to stricter rules for AI apps on major app stores.
