Apple has acknowledged display problems affecting a small number of its first foldable iPhones and is offering replacements to customers whose devices develop screen issues.
The company began shipping the iPhone Duo last week, attracting strong demand as initial online orders sold out within minutes. However, social media posts over the weekend showed some devices developing cracks and visible lines on the inner display near the central hinge where the phone folds.
In a statement on Monday, Apple confirmed that the issue had affected a small number of units and advised customers experiencing display problems to contact AppleCare for a replacement. The company did not explain what was causing the damage or provide further details about the affected devices.
Repair specialists at iFixit investigated the reported failures using teardown footage, patents, and CT scans to create a 3D simulation of the iPhone Duo’s hinge mechanism. Their analysis suggested that the damage appeared to cluster near a display cable running beneath the screen, close to a central support bar.
According to iFixit, the support bar may not move sufficiently out of the display’s way when the phone folds, potentially creating a concentrated stress point near the reported cracks. Apple has not publicly commented on these findings, so the proposed explanation has not been confirmed by the company.
Despite the display concerns, iFixit also concluded that the iPhone Duo was the most repairable foldable phone it had tested. The assessment suggests that the device may be easier to repair than some competing foldable models, although the reported screen failures remain a concern for early buyers.
Apple is also expected to face supply constraints because the iPhone Duo’s passport-style folding design is complex to manufacture. The company has not said whether the display problems will affect production or delivery schedules.
Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at market research firm IDC, described Apple’s replacement offer as the right first step. He pointed to Samsung’s problems with the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, saying that a quick and transparent response can help limit the damage when a new foldable device encounters reliability issues.
