Apple has filed to dismiss its lawsuit against Israeli spyware maker NSO Group, citing concerns about potential risks to its internal threat intelligence program.
Apple initially sued NSO Group in 2021 over the company’s controversial Pegasus spyware, allegedly used to hack iPhones.
In a court filing, Apple stated, “Because of the developments since this suit was filed, proceeding forward at this time would now present too significant a risk to Apple’s threat-intelligence program.” One of the key developments influencing this decision was a report by The Guardian that Israeli officials had seized documents related to NSO Group’s Pegasus software, which could also be relevant to a separate lawsuit filed by WhatsApp.
Apple’s decision to withdraw the lawsuit signals a shift in its approach toward the ongoing battle over surveillance software like Pegasus. However, the company has not ruled out future legal action.
