Amazon has announced that it is expanding access to its healthcare AI assistant, called Health AI, to the main Amazon website and mobile app.

Previously, this assistant was only available inside the One Medical app, the healthcare service Amazon acquired for $3.9 billion in 2023. With this expansion, more users will be able to access the tool directly through Amazon’s platform.

Health AI is designed to help users manage everyday healthcare tasks. The assistant can answer general health questions, explain medical records, help manage prescription renewals, and even assist with booking doctor appointments. According to Amazon, users do not need to be Prime members or One Medical subscribers to start using the assistant.

The goal of Health AI is to act as a personalized digital health assistant. While it can answer general medical questions without accessing personal health information, it can provide more detailed and personalized guidance if a user allows access to their medical records. In those cases, the assistant can help interpret lab results, diagnoses, and treatment information to provide more relevant answers.

For example, a user might ask questions like what their cholesterol test results mean or what they should do if they are experiencing symptoms such as congestion or a sore throat. The assistant can analyze available information and provide suggestions or guidance based on medical knowledge.

Health AI can also help users connect with healthcare providers when professional care is needed. If necessary, the assistant can link users to a One Medical provider for consultation. In the United States, Prime members using Health AI will receive up to five free direct message consultations with One Medical providers for more than thirty common conditions.

These conditions include issues like colds, allergies, acid reflux, urinary tract infections, pink eye, skin care concerns, and hair loss. Users who are not Prime members can still connect with One Medical providers using a pay-per-visit option.

However, the introduction of AI in healthcare also raises concerns about privacy and data security. Researchers have warned that sharing sensitive medical information with AI systems could create risks, especially if companies use conversations to train their models.

Amazon says it has taken steps to protect user privacy. According to the company, Health AI models are trained using abstracted data patterns rather than identifiable personal information. For instance, if many users ask about medication interactions, Amazon may analyze the overall pattern of questions without storing or identifying specific patient details.

The company also stated that all interactions with Health AI occur in a HIPAA-compliant environment. Conversations are protected through encryption and strict access controls to help safeguard medical information. However, Amazon has not publicly shared detailed technical information about how the encryption works or exactly who can access user data.

With user permission, Health AI can also access medical data through the Health Information Exchange. This is a secure nationwide system used in the United States to share patient medical records between healthcare providers. By connecting to this system, the assistant can better understand a user’s medical history and provide more accurate responses.

To begin using Health AI, users need to sign in or create a personal Amazon Health profile through the Amazon Health page. Once access is available, they can start asking health related questions directly through the Amazon website or mobile app.

Amazon’s expansion of Health AI comes at a time when many technology companies are rapidly moving into the healthcare AI space. Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health, a version of its chatbot focused on answering medical questions. Shortly after that, Anthropic announced Claude for Healthcare, another AI system designed to assist with healthcare-related tasks.
