Apple is reportedly preparing a major update for CarPlay that could give drivers more freedom in how they use AI assistants while driving.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is working on adding support for third-party chatbot voice control apps inside CarPlay.

If the update rolls out as expected, drivers may soon be able to talk directly to popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini without needing to first interact with their iPhone. Until now, using these chatbots in the car required manual phone access, which limited convenience and safety.

However, Apple is still keeping tight control over Siri. The report says users will not be able to replace the Siri button or the “Hey Siri” wake word in CarPlay. Instead, users will need to open their preferred chatbot app manually. To make things smoother, Apple plans to let developers enable automatic voice mode when their chatbot apps are opened.

Bloomberg notes that this CarPlay upgrade could arrive within the next few months, though Apple has not officially announced it yet. The move comes shortly after Apple confirmed that Google’s Gemini will help power a new version of Siri, which is expected to launch later this year.

Together, these changes suggest Apple is slowly opening its ecosystem while still keeping Siri at the center of the experience.
