An internal email from Amazon’s cloud division has reignited speculation about another major round of layoffs, after the message was reportedly sent by mistake to employees at Amazon Web Services.
The email, sent by AWS senior vice president Colleen Aubrey, referred to “organizational changes” and acknowledged that such decisions are difficult for employees. According to reports, the message was meant to position the company for “future success” and suggested that some staff members had already been informed about their employment status.
The email reportedly carried the subject line “Project Dawn” and was quickly recalled after being sent. Amazon has not clarified what “Project Dawn” refers to, nor whether the message was shared prematurely. Media reports say potential job cuts could affect teams across AWS as well as Amazon’s core retail, stores, and media operations.
In October 2025, Amazon cut around 14,000 white-collar jobs as part of a broader plan to reduce up to 30,000 roles. Sources now claim the upcoming layoffs could be of a similar scale. While CEO Andy Jassy previously said the cuts were driven by company culture and bureaucracy rather than AI or finances, investors are closely watching Amazon’s upcoming earnings report on February 5 for signals on cost control and AI spending.
