YouTube is introducing a new security measure that temporarily disables certain channel features when it detects suspicious activity that could indicate an account has been hijacked.
The move is designed to prevent attackers from taking control of a creator’s channel and using it to publish unauthorized videos or livestreams while the account owner is locked out.
Under the new system, YouTube may automatically pause selected channel features when it detects unusual or potentially unauthorized activity. While the restriction is active, users will be unable to upload or update videos and Shorts, start livestreams, create playlists or add videos to them, upload custom thumbnails, or change videos from private to unlisted or public.
YouTube says its security teams will review affected channels, typically within 24 hours. If the review confirms that the account is secure, full access to the restricted features will be restored immediately. If the investigation identifies unauthorized activity, YouTube will contact the channel owner with further instructions to help recover the account.
The temporary pause is intended to limit the damage hackers can cause after gaining access to a creator’s account. Attackers often rush to publish unwanted videos or livestreams, potentially exposing the channel to policy violations and even termination before the legitimate owner can regain control.
During the security review, existing videos will remain available for viewers, who can continue watching content and interacting with the channel. YouTube also says the temporary restriction will not affect the channel’s monetization status, helping creators avoid additional disruption while their accounts are being checked.
Affected creators will see a banner in YouTube Studio explaining that their channel has been temporarily restricted for security reasons. YouTube will also provide information about the incident, an estimated review time, and steps to secure the account and check for unauthorized changes.
The company continues to recommend that creators enable two-step verification and use strong, unique passwords to reduce the risk of account takeovers. However, the new feature acknowledges that preventive measures alone cannot eliminate every threat, particularly when attackers use phishing, malicious software, or stolen session credentials to gain access.
By temporarily restricting sensitive channel operations while investigating suspicious activity, YouTube aims to give creators more time to recover their accounts before attackers can cause lasting damage.
