Microsoft has rolled out a major upgrade to Notepad on Windows 11, introducing support for Markdown-style text formatting.

The lightweight text editor now allows users to format text using a new toolbar or Markdown syntax, similar to features previously found in the now-deprecated WordPad.

The new formatting toolbar, enabled by default, offers quick options to apply headings, subheadings, bullet points, numbered lists, bold, italic, and even hyperlinks. Users can highlight a line and select a formatting style from the toolbar to instantly apply it. Alternatively, those comfortable with Markdown syntax can use shortcuts like ### to create headers while typing.

Notepad’s Markdown support is designed to be lightweight and non-intrusive, with minimal impact on system resources. Users can choose to keep formatting as they type or toggle off the feature entirely through the Notepad Settings menu.

This update reflects Microsoft’s effort to modernize Notepad while retaining the simplicity that long-time users appreciate. Unlike WordPad, which has been phased out, Notepad now bridges the gap between a basic text editor and a minimal word processor.

If users prefer the classic experience, Microsoft has made it easy to disable all formatting options with just a few clicks.
