Microsoft first added a dark mode option back in Windows 10 (2016), but the experience was far from complete. Many parts of the operating system stayed bright, leaving users with an odd mix of light and dark elements. Now, almost a decade later, Windows 11 is finally showing signs of improvement.

In the latest preview build, more system dialogs are adopting the dark theme. Windows enthusiast Phantomofearth noticed that file operation dialogs, such as when you copy or delete files, now appear in dark mode. This is a welcome change for users who prefer a consistent dark look across the OS.

However, it’s still a work in progress. While the dialogs themselves are dark, the buttons remain in light mode, breaking the overall experience.

Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed any major changes yet, but these small tweaks suggest a larger dark mode overhaul could arrive with the Windows 11 25H2 update later this year.

That said, plenty of areas remain untouched — including the Control Panel, Run prompt, and file properties windows, all of which are still stuck in light mode. After nearly 10 years, many users are hoping Microsoft will finally unify the UI.

For comparison, Apple has offered a polished dark mode since macOS Mojave (2018), and its upcoming Liquid Glass redesign will push visual consistency even further with translucency effects.

Whether Windows 11 will catch up and deliver a truly seamless dark mode remains to be seen. But if these early changes are a sign of what’s coming, dark mode fans might finally get the complete experience they’ve been waiting for.
