Cyberattacks on refrigeration systems hit UK meat-processing firms after a wave of attacks targeted supermarkets across Europe, with attackers changing cooling settings at some businesses.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre said the national impact was minimal. The developments followed refrigeration attacks across European supermarkets.
At the launch of the NCSC’s annual review on November 3, director of operations Paul Chichester said the centre was working with affected companies and monitoring the incidents, The Guardian and ITV News reported.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers said roughly 300 of its members were affected. The refrigeration units were empty at the time, so no meat was lost. A London fruit and vegetable wholesaler also reported an attack but disconnected its cold-storage units before stock was damaged. No major UK grocery chain was directly affected.
NCSC chief executive Richard Horne said teams had contacted UK organizations with vulnerable technology exposed to the internet. Officials said the incidents involved long-standing vulnerabilities and were not AI-enabled. The centre has not identified who carried out the attacks.
