The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has launched a new Vulnerability Research Initiative (VRI) aimed at enhancing collaboration with external cybersecurity researchers to improve the discovery and understanding of software and hardware vulnerabilities.

While the NCSC already conducts internal research on a broad range of technologies, the VRI will operate as a parallel program that leverages the expertise of the wider security community. The goal is to identify critical flaws more effectively and share insights with partners and stakeholders promptly.

As the UK’s lead authority on cybersecurity, the NCSC is responsible for protecting the nation’s infrastructure, government entities, businesses, and citizens from cyber threats. Through its new initiative, the agency seeks to strengthen national cyber resilience by combining internal efforts with contributions from top external researchers.

According to the agency’s announcement, the VRI will provide structured collaboration where selected experts will be tasked with discovering vulnerabilities in products of national interest, evaluating potential mitigations, and responsibly disclosing findings through the NCSC’s ‘Equities Process’.

Participating researchers will also be asked to share the tools and methodologies used during their vulnerability research to help the NCSC build a standardized framework of effective practices. The agency noted a particular interest in engaging with specialists focused on emerging areas such as AI-powered vulnerability discovery.

Security professionals interested in contributing to the initiative can contact the NCSC via email at vri@ncsc.gov.uk to express interest and outline their areas of expertise. However, the agency emphasized that this address should not be used for submitting full vulnerability reports, which should instead be submitted through its official reporting portal.
