The popular dating safety app Tea, known for allowing women to share anonymous comments about men they’ve dated, has suffered a major data breach.

The company confirmed on Friday that hackers accessed over 72,000 images, including 13,000 selfies and photo IDs submitted for account verification, and 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages.

Tea clarified that no phone numbers or email addresses were exposed, and that only users who signed up before February 2024 were affected by the breach.

“We have engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and are working around the clock to secure our systems,” the company stated. “At this time, we have implemented additional security measures and have fixed the data issue.”

The breach came to light after users on 4chan claimed to be sharing stolen personal images and data from Tea, according to a report by 404 Media.

Ironically, the hack occurred just as the app achieved viral status, hitting the number one spot in Apple’s App Store for free apps by Saturday morning.

Tea’s developers say they are continuing to investigate the breach and have urged users to remain cautious and follow updates as the situation unfolds.
