Starlink will begin lowering its satellites from about 550 km to 480 km in 2026 to improve space safety, SpaceX said.
The move aims to reduce collision risks as Earth’s orbit becomes increasingly crowded with satellites.
The decision follows a recent in-orbit anomaly that caused one Starlink satellite to lose communication and produce a small amount of debris.
With nearly 10,000 satellites in space, SpaceX says operating below 500 km will help limit long-term space debris.
