Signal has added secure backups to its iOS app, making it safer and easier to recover your chat history if your phone is lost or damaged.

This new feature allows you to save your messages and media with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that only you can access them.

The free plan allows you to store up to 100MB of text messages, along with the last 45 days of photos, videos, GIFs, and files. For users who require more space, Signal offers a $1.99 monthly upgrade. The paid option backs up all your text messages and includes up to 100GB of media storage beyond the 45-day limit.

Signal first rolled out secure backups on Android in September. Like the Android version, iOS backups are protected with a 64-character recovery key generated on your device. This key is the only way to restore your backup, and Signal cannot help recover it if you lose it.

To turn on secure backups, open Settings in the Signal app and select Backups. Tap Setup, enable backups, and then write down or safely store your recovery key. After confirming it, choose either the free plan or the paid option. Signal will then begin saving your chats and media securely.

The company says it is also working on adding secure backups to the desktop app. In the future, Signal plans to support transferring encrypted message history between Android, iOS, and desktop, making it easier to switch devices without losing your conversations.
